A school for little Führers: Horst Wesselhalle

Between 1934 and 1936, Schloss Erwitte was transformed into Schulungsburg. Several buildings were added for this cadres’ school of the egalitarian trade unions, Deutsche Arbeitsfront: DAF. Connection to the local building tradition was guiding in the design of shelters and teaching buildings, which explained the half-timbering. In contrast, the joint banquet hall for manifestations-the Horst Wesselhalle-was to exude authority as a space where the ‘new people’ came together. After 90 years, the ideological planting -botanical politics- of, especially lime and oak trees, provides a leafy environment.
